A Solution to A Problem

Orion Musical Instruments began as a solution to a problem while Jeff was the Head Band Director at Godley, Texas: finding quality instruments at affordable prices. With Erik Lifchez, Jeff developed the Orion concept. At first, the brand was 'Musician Supply' named for Erik's store in Lexington, South Carolina. In 2014, the Orion name was selected for the instrument line at The NAMM Show in Anaheim, CA.

Development & Review Process

Various adjustments were made to the instruments and/or better manufacturers were found before they hit the Texas market in 2015. Our development process is lengthy and includes discussions with the manufacturers, prototype instruments, rigorous testing by band directors and professional players with feedback regarding the tone, quality, and craftsmanship of the instruments. Our development and review process can sometimes take years, but when the instrument is finally ready for production, we know we have a quality, well-built, affordable instrument.

Our Promise

Orion was born in North Texas, where some of the most discerning band directors teach. Orion has also been in the hands of band students, from beginner to advanced, both on the field and off. In December 2017, Orion made its national debut at The Midwest Band & Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. We stand behind our Orion instruments with one year's free maintenance that covers everything but abuse, neglect, loss, and theft. And yes, parts are available.

Dave coined the name "d4d drill design" from all of his band members at Castleberry HS calling him "D" and since his name is Dave Daniel, that is a drill designer, the name "d4d drill design" was born.  Marching Band has been in his blood all of his band life since being a trumpet player in the Nationally Acclaimed LD Bell High School Band directed by Roger Winslow, Danna Rothlisberger and Ernie Repass as a teenager.

After high school, Dave went on to study Music Education at Texas Christian University under the guidance of Bob Blanton, Curtis Wilson, Linda McDavitt and Steven Moser, where he was a member of the TCU Marching Band.

After graduating with his Bachelor of Music Education Degree, he taught one year at Aledo ISD as Assistant Band Director and then returned to TCU as Graduate Assistant Band Director to pursue further Graduate Studies; studying Music Education with Bob Blanton & Ruth Whitlock, Marching Band Techniques & Drill Design with Steven Moser and Jazz Education & Arranging with Curtis Wilson.

After graduating with his Master of Music Education Degree, Dave spent the next 24 years as a Band Director at Castleberry High School.  As the Drill Designer and Arranger, Castleberry was a perennial UIL Award Winning Marching Band including countless Superior Ratings at UIL Region Marching Contest, finishing as a Finalist every time at UIL Area Marching Contest and made 3 appearances at the UIL State Marching Contest, winning the Bronze Medal in 2000.

As a drill designer and arranger for the past 30 years, Dave has designed custom drills for several different high school marching bands of all sizes and ability-levels across Texas.  Dave’s work has been performed and awarded at several UIL Region, Area and State competitions throughout Texas.

After spending the large part of his career in schools that, while supported its band program as much as it could, did not have the financial resources that many of the other programs of similar school classification; Dave believes that all marching bands deserve to have quality drill design.  A product that the students, parents, school district and community can all take pride in.  And it's reflected in the pricing for a custom drill design, because every program deserves to put out the very best show possible!

DAVE DANIEL: BAND COMPOSER & ARRANGER

Dave's journey in Composition & Arranging began in his Senior Year at LD Bell High School when he took Music Theory from TCU Band Hall of Famer Ernie Repass.  It was in this class that Dave wrote his first work, which each student had to write a chorale and score it for both Symphonic Band & A Cappella Choir.

This first work was played by both the LD Bell High School 1st Band (directed by Roger Winslow) and the LD Bell A Cappella Choir (directed by Bobbie Douglass).  What an existential experience that was...  To actually hear the first work he ever wrote being performed by not one, but TWO National Acclaimed Musical Groups....  What a way to start and from there, he had the bug.

Dave then went to Texas Christian University, where he studied Orchestration, Arranging & Composition with Boosey & Hawkes Composer, Curt Wilson. Under Professor Wilson's guidance, Dave wrote and arranged for wide spectrum of instrumental ensembles: Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Marching Band and countless others.

After earning his Bachelors & Masters Degrees from TCU, Dave went on to a successful multi-decade band directing career at Castleberry High School and it was there that he quietly applied his writing talents.  Arranging for the Lion Marching Band, as well as adapting & rescoring music for all of the ensembles throughout the program, the Castleberry High School Band achieved great success receiving countless awards in competition from Texas UIL and across the nation.

After his retirement and taking a break from music, Dave began writing again for the sheer joy of composing.  He loves writing for all levels from the youngest Beginning Bands to the most seasoned Advanced Ensemble.

About Dave's works... All of his works have:

  • Personal meaning and a story behind them that is relatable to a band's director, their students and their audience
  • Teaching Components that focus on student mastery, whether it is new rhythms, new notes or improving instrumental technique (scales, arpeggios and the like)
  • Opportunities for all instrument groups to experience playing melodic elements

To see and listen to Dave's works for Concert Band, scroll down to "ORIGINAL BAND COMPOSITIONS BY DAVE DANIEL" where you can read about each piece and listen for yourself.  We know you will enjoy them.

And whether you would like to purchase a work for your band that he has already written or would like him to write a work that fits you and your bands needs, please reach out to us by clicking on the button below that will email him directly and he will be glad to personally discuss it with you!

ORIGINAL BAND COMPOSITIONS BY DAVE DANIEL (RECORDINGS BELOW)

"A March for Gracie" by Dave Daniel

YOUNG BAND COMPOSITION (GRADE 1.5)

Gracie is Cathy and I's Teacup Yorkie that is nearing her 10th birthday and is our special love!

"A March for Gracie" is a piece written for Young Bands in their second year of playing. It depicts Gracie's everyday life within a minute and a half. Since she's such a happy, caring and loving dog, the march style is so appropriate to musically describe her.

It's written in the Key of Eb Major, which is a very happy key! It starts with a short scale-pattern with a snippet of syncopation. Then after a short percussion break, the march's theme takes over being first played softly by the Clarinets, which Cathy played in the Cleburne High School Band in the late 1970s, and accompanied tastefully by the Concert Snare Drum. Gracie's theme is then repeated by the Full Band with Low Brass & Woodwind Countermelody and also featuring the Flutes & Oboes on top playing a fun, appeggiated-based Obligato.

Then the piece shifts to C Minor depicted the moments of the day that Gracie feels that she has to defend her backyard from the neighboring dogs. And of course, Gracie is triumphant! She may be only 5 pounds, but she is TOUGH!

And after she triumphs against the other evil dogs (Ha Ha Ha), we return to her theme in all of her glory (having fun going on adventures and car rides with Mom & Dad) with the 1st Clarinets joining the fun Obligato with the Flutes & Oboes building to triumphant ending signally the conclusion of another great day with our Gracie!

"Spring Valley Overture" by Dave Daniel

INTERMEDIATE BAND COMPOSITION (GRADE 2-2.5)

Spring Valley was the name of the street that I lived on from in Bedford, Texas when I was in 6th grade until my graduation from LD Bell High School in the early 1980's. That street was so appropriately name because both ends of the street sat on top of hills and ran down into a valley...
.
When I lived there, almost all of the families had young children, and we were always outside either in the front yard playing or as we got older, in the street engaged in some very, what we thought, serious games of street football.

The piece starts in 4/4 with percussion followed by a full band introduction in the key of Eb. After that, the main theme is introduced by a flute soli that softly states the first main theme signifying that a few of the kids are starting to come out to joyously play. Then this theme repeated strongly by the low brass and woodwinds because the big kids are out playing seriously. Above the low brass melody, a festive countermelody depicting the young children innocently playing is being played by the upper woodwinds and brass.

Then, as we all returned inside, the piece quickly transitions from Allegro to Andante, changing from 4/4 to 3/4 and modulates to the key of Bb.

This section depicts the beauty of the street and surrounding neighborhood standing alone with its lush, well-kept yards and mature trees. This beautiful lyrical melody is first played by the flutes either as solo or section feature and then repeated by the entire band.

Upon its conclusion, it quickly returns back to the Allegro section, signifying that all of the kids are back and once again, having innocent fun and comes to an end with a short Codetta emulating the Introduction.

All bands need an opening selection and I wrote Spring Valley Overture with several different types of bands in mind. With its practical ranges and rhythms, it can be successfully performed by top Middle School Bands, Small High Schoo Bands as well as Intermediate High School Bands.

Spring Valley Overture affords the opportunity for a band to develop mastery of eighth-quarter-eighth syncopation, including it use on the weak beat, count 2 in 4/4. Every section gets to perform a melodic element and the percussion is fully engaged, allowing for total envolvement of all of a band's percussion members; exposing them to a spectrum of color instruments.

"Off To The Races" by Dave Daniel

TRADITIONAL MARCH FOR BAND (GRADE 2.5-3)

"Off To The Races," is a Traditional Quickstep March written in the style of the likes of KL King and John Phillip Sousa. Recorded as a Quick Step, it can also be played well at Traditional March Tempo.

With its break-speed tempo and flashy scale passages, "Off To The Races" starts in the Key of F with fun melodies and countermelodies, then modulating to the Key of Bb for the Trio with the 1st Time being played softly with the Clarinets and Euphonium holding down the melody. The full band then returns on the repeat with powerful full band scoring until the end!

Enjoy!
